The best season to visit Lumbini is from April - May when birth of Lord Buddha is celebrated in a grand manner. During this period, Hindus gather here in 


Most people come just for a day trip and usually stay the night in Bhairawa or Sunauli 22 km away. It is possible to stay in the very basic facilities at some of the monasteries for a donation.

Sometimes the bathrooms can be quite depressing. The Theravada monastery has a basic dharmshala. It may be possible to stay at the Tibetan Monastery, outside of the winter months. It may also be possible to stay at the Dae Sun Suk Gu Sa Monastery. 

Some of the hotels are Lumbini Hokke Hotel, Buddha Maya Garden Hotel, Hotel Pawan International, Hotel Nirvana, Lumbini Buddha Garden, etc.


Whether you fly or take a bus, you can not directly reach Lumbini from Kathmandu. There are flights to Bhairahawa from Kathmandu (takes about 40 minutes and costs around US$ 107)You will reach Bhairahawa, some 20 km east of Lumbini. You need to take a local bus, taxi from Bhairahawa to Lumbini. 

If travelling by bus from Kathmandu, Pokhara, Gorakhpur and Varanasi , you can come to Sunauli which is around 30 km from Lumbini. You can take taxis from there.


The Lumbini is one of the ten world sites for religious pilgrimage and sole source of worlds one of the major religions--Buddhism and the source of world peace and prosperity, and no doubt one of the places to be visited in your lifetime. There are a number of ancient ruins of Buddhist monasteries, a sacred Bo tree, and a sacred bathing pool, called Puskharni pool, where Maya Devi had taken a bath before giving birth to Gautam Buddha, Maya Devi temple, scared garden spread over 8 Sq km, Ashoka pillar to name a few the Lumbini is situated in the foothills of the Himalayas of Nepal, which houses a large garden with a grove of Pipal trees, and the area is full of a number of religious and cultural sites, Buddhist temples and shrines from various nations are scattered around the holy site itself.
